The department

Skadden is one of the few large law firms with integrated CFIUS and corporate practices. We counsel clients worldwide — public and private companies, private equity funds, venture capital firms, and sovereign wealth and other government-related funds — on structuring and negotiating transactions to anticipate and address national security-related regulatory concerns in the earliest stages of transaction planning. The group has been repeatedly recognized by Chambers USA and Chambers Global for both International Trade: CFIUS Experts and Corporate M&A, with both guides highlighting the firm’s “work with a diverse collection of U.S. and international companies, aided by its phenomenal strength in M&A.”

Our London and Washington D.C. offices form an integrated team providing non-U.S. foreign investment screening advice (in addition to CFIUS advice) to clients across the globe, including purchasers, sellers, minority investors, financial institutions, private equity consortia and other institutional investors — in some of the largest and most complex international transactions.  The London team operates within the Corporate Group.

The Role

We are recruiting an associate to join our Corporate Group as a member of a team dedicated to coordinating non-U.S. foreign direct investment screening advice and reviews.

Person Specification

We are looking for one individual with 0 to 3 years' relevant post qualification experience in a top tier practice in the London market or experience in a similar common law jurisdiction.  Those with less or more relevant experience will be considered on their merits.  The role requires a candidate with excellent experience in servicing clients.  Excellent written communication and drafting skills are also required as well as the ability to demonstrate initiative.   They must also possess the willingness and skillset to take on a high degree of responsibility. A high level of academic achievement is also required.

The role will comprise (1) conducting foreign investment screening analysis; (2) coordinating multi-jurisdictional foreign investment screening filings, including working with local counsel where required; (3) preparing and submitting UK National Security and Investment Act notifications; and (4) advising on regulatory strategy in relation to national security filings in the context of transactions.

The successful hire will likely have a background in foreign investment screening (either independently or in the context of an Antitrust practice), and will be part of the establishment of a dedicated foreign investment screening team.  Candidates with relevant foreign investment screening experience from national security advisory, government contracting and trade compliance teams will also be considered.

Remuneration

We pay generous rates. We provide our lawyers with a highly competitive benefits package.  The package includes:

  • Discretionary year-end bonus
  • Technology allowance
  • 22 days holiday and 3 personal days
  • Enhanced maternity/paternity and parental leave
  • Private medical insurance
  • Permanent health insurance
  • Travel insurance
  • Life assurance
  • Interest free season ticket loan
  • Gym allowance

Mentoring and Hybrid Working

Associates who join Skadden laterally participate in our mentor program, Skadden Integration+, which specifically focuses on the unique needs experienced attorneys face during professional transitions.

These efforts, along with our professional development and other Skadden benefits, including a hybrid work model (which remains subject to review), consists of working Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the office (for full-time attorneys), and living proximate to the office, underscores Skadden's long-standing commitment to investing in its people, culture and diversity.

Training and Development

The Skadden training programme has evolved over the years as the firm has grown and assists our lawyers in their development by providing them with the necessary skills to take on as much responsibility as they are ready for.  The programme includes:

  • Regular meetings of the corporate restructuring group to discuss developments and share know-how.
  • Weekly training seminars and workshops for all levels covering legal topics relevant to the firm's practice areas and skills.  These are presented by partners, associates, external specialists, QCs and other professionals.
  • Live video-links to seminars presented across Skadden's network of offices.

A number of pro bono opportunities are also available to our lawyers through our pro bono programme.  We are affiliated to a number of pro bono organisations, including LawWorks, that provide pro bono projects to the firm.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to our success as a global law firm, giving us a wealth of different perspectives from which to address our clients’ most pressing issues across a wide spectrum of industries, geographies and cultures. We strive to develop initiatives at Skadden to specifically address diversity, equity and inclusion goals — including for recruiting, professional development, attorney retention and advancement, and cross-cultural awareness — while also continually inculcating inclusion principles into the fabric of the firm. This includes ensuring that all job applicants are treated fairly regardless of, for example, age, disability, sex, race and sexual orientation as per our Equal Employment Opportunity statement. If you require adjustments to be made during the selection process, please speak to Nicola Kerley (Nicola.kerley@skadden.com) from the recruitment team.
